FAQ’s

Why should I switch?

The renewable energy target (RET) has helped drive the generational shift towards rooftop solar and other forms of renewable energy in Australia. The Renewable Energy Target is bringing down the electricity price and encouraging investment in renewable energy whilst at the same time creating thousands of clean technology jobs. In other words, it’s working.

By supporting energy retailers who are working to protect the RET, you’re helping to transform Australia into the renewable energy powerhouse it should be.

Can I switch?

Anyone who is connected to the electricity grid can switch to an energy retailer that is working to protect the RET and has strong environmental credentials.

How do I switch?

It’s quick and easy! You can do it all online and your chosen provider will even contact your current provider to let them know you’re switching.

Who should I switch to?

Greenpeace recently conducted a ranking of Australian electricity providers and published the findings in The Green Electricity Guide 2014. Powershop was ranked number 1 in Australia and number 1 in Victoria, and Diamond Energy was ranked number 1 in NSW, Queensland and South Australia and ranked number 2 in Victoria

Anyone in Victoria and New South Wales can switch to Powershop or Diamond Energy.

If you are in South Australia, or Southeast Queensland, you can switch to Diamond Energy.

What if I am on a contract and want to switch?

You can change your electricity retailer at any time. If you are on a contract with your existing electricity retailer you can find out from them whether there are any exit fees when you leave, but ultimately they can’t stop you from switching.

Powershop has no lock in contracts and no exit fees. And don’t worry if you are locked into a contract – they’ll even cover the exit fees (up to $75) if your current provider charges you for switching).

If you switch to Diamond Energy and leave after 12 months there are no exit fees.

Will switching cost me more?

In Victoria, energy retailers are making profits four times higher than in other states, according to the 2013 report by the Essential Services Commission (ESC). Meaning that switching may well save you money.

The most recent (October 2014) report of the ESC in Victoria stated that: “taking into account all available discounts, the lowest overall prices were most commonly available from Powershop.”

Although the 2014 ESC report included data pre-carbon tax repeal, Diamond Energy and Powershop were the cheapest in their chosen segments in each Victorian distributor.

What energy sources do Diamond Energy and Powershop use?

Powershop

Powershop is part of Meridian Energy, a 100% renewable energy generator (in fact the largest 100% renewable energy generator in Australasia). Meridian Energy in Australia operates two wind farms and these wind farms produce more renewable energy than the total energy Powershop sells. So every dollar you spend with Powershop will help them support renewable energy.

Powershop offers 100% GreenPower accredited products and Meridian Energy’s Mt Millar wind farm in South Australia is a 100% GreenPower accredited generator.

You can purchase 100% GreenPower products from Powershop that involve Powershop voluntarily surrendering additional Renewable Energy Certificates to encourage even further investment in renewable energy than the Government mandates under the Renewable Energy Target.

They source more electricity from renewable generators than their total customers consume. You can read more about these on their website.

Is the offer available to people with rooftop solar?

Powershop

Unlike some solar unfriendly retailers, Powershop does not charge solar customers higher rates for the electricity they consume, and gives solar customers the same discounts as its non solar customers. Powershop pays all solar customers a feed in rate higher than the government regulated rate.

Diamond Energy

Diamond Energy is the solar friendly retailer and services thousands of solar customers offering some of the most competitive rates and one of the highest feed in rates for solar. If you are one of the early adopter households who recognised the benefits of solar years ago, then you are probably already receiving a state based feed in tariff under a scheme that is now closed to new recipients. Subject to eligibility check, you will continue to receive your feed in tariff when you switch to Diamond Energy. If you are eligible for a net feed in tariff, they will top it up with their standard rate which is currently  one of the highest available.

Diamond Energy also has programs that offer even higher feed in rates if you purchase new systems through one of their Pure Power Installers.
